There are two main beaches in Whitby – Whitby West Cliff Beach and Tates Hill Beach. Of the two, Whitby West Cliff Beach is the larger, and with a Blue Flag and a Quality Coast Award to its name it’s always a favourite with the bucket and spade brigade. Sunny days see the two miles of sand that stretch from the West Pier come to life as families unroll their towels and enjoy one of Yorkshire’s nicest sandy beaches.
They love their colourful beach huts on the Yorkshire coastline, and Whitby’s no different. There’s a line of them available to hire for those of you who like to spend as much time as possible on the sand, and there are also deckchairs and windbreaks for hire if you pop along to the slipway close to the West Pier. Children can enjoy donkey rides from this area during the summer, and West Cliff Beach also has plenty of space for the important things in life like kite flying, paddling and ball games.
There’s a seasonal dog ban between May and September, although they are welcome all year round on Whitby’s Tate Hill Beach. If you’ve got little ones who aren’t quite sure about the sea yet try the paddling pool on the West Cliff.
