A ten minute drive from Rhayader, Gilfach Nature Reserve is described by one reviewer as “a gorgeous place to be”. Beautiful, peaceful, and one of the best spots in the region for experiencing wildlife, this one’s perfect for a wander and some time out. It’s not unusual to see Red Kites feeding, and if you head to the waterfall look out for salmon leaping in and out of the water.
When the gorse and heather are in flower, the whole reserve comes to life with splashes of colour, and you’ll find picnic tables for those family feasts before you set about wandering the reserve. There’s an information centre too, complete with toilets and a kettle for those of you with a hankering for a hot drink, and there’s something tranquil about Gilfach that makes it a truly relaxing place to spend an hour or two.
You’ll find a selection of waymarked walks, so if you fancy taking in the scenery on foot you’ll be able to pick the route that’s best for you. And while you’re there, make sure you listen out for cuckoos, as you can usually here their calls as you make your way through the scenery.
