The Norman castle looms high above the historic market town, and was built in the traditional motte and bailey style shortly after the Conquest. The castle was probably intended to overawe the Saxon town below, and the stone shell-keep that crowns the mound was built after the rest of the castle.\u003cbr /\u003e\r\n\t\u003cbr /\u003e\r\n\tThanks to its height, one of Totnes Castle\u0026rsquo;s biggest draws today is the stunning views over Totnes and the River Dart far below. There are more than 70 steep steps to climb up to the castle, and please note that the steps leading up to the keep are uneven. If you don\u0026rsquo;t mind a bit of a clamber and you have time it\u0026rsquo;s well worth taking on the steps up to the castle, and you\u0026rsquo;ll find benches and picnic tables in the Bailey.
