Much of the house is medieval and it’s thought to date all the way back to 1300, and the alterations made by Sir Richard Edgcumbe make it one of the UK’s best examples of a Tudor building.

The home’s medieval roots made it the perfect ancestral home, and the wealthy Edgcumbes enjoyed impressing their guests with it – including King George III in the year 1789. The house has more than its share of tales and legends woven into its history, and the many textiles and tapestries found inside bring them to life for visitors. The walls are draped with imposing tapestries, the tables shine as though ready for guests and the whole building feels as though its influential owners might return any second. The house is also home to historic oak furniture, brass and pewter

Cotehele is just as inspiring on the outside as inside, and visitors can take their pick of beautiful spots for a walk or just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. The surrounding land is gorgeous in any season, and many visitors come every year to enjoy the gardens as they change. The first flowers of spring are always exciting as the gardens reawaken, and the herbaceous borders delight visitors during the summer.

Wander the Valley Garden until you feel a world away from the house, and make sure you get a photo of the dovecote as you pass. The Upper Garden has two orchards, and they produce local apples and cherries each year. This is a garden with something for everyone, no matter when they discover it. Lastly, make sure you don’t miss Shamrock, the newly restored boat docked at the quay.
