The helpful and pleasant owners live next door and were happy to give advice, directions, recommendations etc.
We weren't made aware of building work going on at a neighbouring property which was a bit noisy at times, but I'm sure will be short-lived. Their scaffolding did make it easy for friends to find the property! It was not really a problem as we were out most of the time - it was just irksome to me as we have been surrounded by noisy building work at home for many months.
There was a bright and spacious open plan living kitchen, which was well equipped. The only niggle with equipment was that the knives were blunt - I usually take one of my own but had forgotten.
We did get inundated with houseflies on two of the days - change of weather/being in the countryside, maybe? It did get very warm inside with the windows shut to keep out the flies.
As we travelled in Covid times as 2 households, it did make it difficult to maintain distance as the table (when fully opened) just seated 4 quite close together. Also, there was one large sofa and only one easy chair, again making it hard to distance - a second easy chair would have been great. Only an issue if 2 households in Covid times, as seating itself was ample for 4, and comfortable.
The main bedroom bed is a 4' 6" double (we are used to a 5') but we slept really well as it was very comfy - it would not suit if you are tall as the bed has a wooden frame, raised at the foot end. Ensuite had a decent sized shower. This room did need shelving (other than the worktop style dressing table area) or drawers (bedside table drawers very small) for folded clothes and smalls, but hanging space was plentiful. Hairdryers had been removed due to Covid, so remember to take your own!
Friends slept in the twin room, which had better drawer space.
The main bathroom was spacious but it was a shame that the shower over the bath was just a hand set for when seated - a shower screen and full height shower would have been better in our situation (especially in Covid19 times) as each couple kept to one bathroom. Obviously not an issue for whole households/families.
The hallway offered plenty of cupboard space to store any 'stuff' you bring and it housed mops/bucket/hoover/laundry basket and rack and also a highchair. There were cushions for the 4 outside chairs around a table with a parasol in a very small area beside the front door. This area is slightly private but does form part of the gravelled driveway of the two properties, so not particularly good it you have young children as there is no other outdoor space. Saying this, there is so much beautiful countryside around to walk to, or short drives (longer walks) to take to beautiful coastal areas that it may not be a problem.
It is not a property with views as most of the windows, apart from the lounge French doors are veluxes. The master has a velux and a window, but that looks onto a brick wall.
The village itself is chocolate box pretty, with thatched cottages, a babbling brook flowing through with a pond with weeping willow and wildfowl. Within walking distance there is a pub which serves food: it has plenty of outdoor space and great views of the white horse and rider on the hillside. On the main road there is a well-stocked Co-op and a little further on, a Spar. On the same road we noticed a couple of fish and chip shops and an Indian restaurant (I think!).
As one of our party had been shielding and another high risk, we avoided eating out too much. I had a Sainsbury's delivery to the cottage (also noticed Waitrose deliver there...and maybe others) but as I said, the local Co-op seemed to have most things, although in Covid, you may have to queue.
We would definitely stay here again (maybe not as 2 couples in Covid). The cottage was lovely and the surrounding areas superb - countryside, beaches, towns. Our only disappointment in site-seeing was that local NT properties were closed as were museums in Dorchester (plans for rainy days thwarted), worth being aware of in these current times, so do check before visiting any!
