If you enjoy a long walk dotted with landmarks that tell the tale of the area then we’d recommend it.

This route not only takes it walkers past the iconic Needles at the island’s most westerly tip but it also ushers them across downland, so expect views aplenty and leave around 5 hours to complete the walk. There are some steep sections along the way, so sturdy shoes with a good grip are essential for this one.

Look out for the coloured cliffs at Alum Bay, this used to be the site of intense mining and now the cliffs attract visitors keen to marvel at the natural colours throughout the variegated cliffs. If you time your walk to pass Hanover Point when the tide’s low you’ll be able to see the pine raft fossil forest. The forest stood more than 20 million years ago (yes, 20 million!) and has been to mudstone over time.
