Somerset may seem a quiet and tranquil county but don't be fooled...deep underground you'll find a series of showcaves, a mysterious river and a history laced with pagan and Christian legends. These legendary show caves are home to a mysterious underground river, rumours of a witch and a fascinating history.
OK, so Wookey Hole Caves aren’t quite a Weston-super-Mare family attraction, but they’re just a 40 minute drive away and well worth the journey. The caves have a human history that goes back more than 50,000 years, and if you believe the legends you'll see the Witch's kitchen, which was once home to a witch in the Dark Ages.
When anything went awry in the nearby village the witch was held accountable and the locals eventually sent a daring monk inside to help them. It's said that the pair began a battle of wills, before the monk blessed the water and threw it over the witch - immediately turning her to stone. Don't believe us? Look out for her stoney form in the caves when you visit.
