The beach is owned by the National Trust, and as the cliffs that back it date back around 199 million years we’re pretty sure this must be their oldest site...

The beach was named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed on it in 1685 as he tried to steal the crown from King James II. The attempt was unsuccessful and twelve locals were hanged on the beach in the days after his defeat.

Monmouth Beach is dog friendly all year round so those on dog friendly Dorset holidays are often seen strolling up and down looking for fossils while their pets enjoy the shore. There’s barely a beach on this stretch of coast that isn’t dotted with fascinating fossils, and finds on Monmouth Beach have included ammonites, plant fossils and belemnites.

In fact, if you time your visit to this beach around the tides you can even walk the ammonite pavement. Some of the ammonites measure more than 50cm in diameter so it’s an amazing sight for all ages. Wear shoes with grips when you visit this beach as it can get slippery and it is quite rocky – but if you’re after a days’ exploring and a walk for your dog then you’ll have a great time. Also, be careful of getting too close to the cliffs as there have been rock falls in recent years.

https://assets.bluechipholidays.co.uk/media/catalogs/public/downloads/preview/custom_carousel/users/JosephG/2013/05/fossil.jpg/carousel.jpg
dorset/bridport-lyme-regis/monmouth-beach
https://assets.bluechipholidays.co.uk/media/catalogs/public/downloads/preview/custom_1x1/users/JosephG/2013/05/fossil.jpg/carousel.jpg
