With its slow breaks and gently sloping nature, St Ives Bay is a lovely place to learn to surf. There’s great surf all year round, the waters tend to be warmer than at many other surfing spots and the surf isn’t too daunting for first time surfers. The surf forms and breaks slowly in St Ives Bay, so it’s a safe area to learn before trying some of Cornwall’s more dramatic waves. The Gwithian Academy of Surfing is based in St Ives and takes full advantage of the bay’s qualities, and this friendly surf school makes learning the sport great fun.
Every coach at Gwithian Academy of Surfing is qualified in surf coaching, lifeguarding and first aid, so you’ll be in safe hands throughout the experience. In fact, two of them have even coached the British Junior Surfing Team so you’ll be learning from the best. They make sure that learners of all levels have fun during every lesson, and they’re carefully designed to be rewarding for all ages. The school os one of only three in Britain that’s accredited by the Academy of Surfing Instructors, and you’ll find it right on the northern tip of St Ives Bay in Gwithian.
The beachside surf school has comfortable changing facilities, a classroom for teaching surfing theory and offering video analysis to help you learn, and there’s plenty of parking. Lessons are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers who just want to brush up on their skills. The surf shop if right beside the training facility, and the staff will be on hand to help you choose the right equipment for your build and experience – so all you need to worry about is having a great time and learning to surf.
The Gwithian Academy of Surfing specialises in teaching families, children, groups of friends and couples, and one to one tuition is available too.
