The St Agnes Giant Bolster Festival has it all, a family event that’s been tradition for years and years, a local legend that started it all and lots of good humour. Where else could you see a huge giant floating its way through a village as the local children run ahead?
Rumour has it that Bolster the giant once lived in the St Agnes hills, wreaking fear and havoc amongst the villagers. The giant was finally beaten by his love for Agnes, a local girl, who tricked him to his demise, and the event celebrates the end of the legendary giant’s tyranny! The Bolster Pageant always takes place on the Sunday before May Day and includes drummers, a parade through the streets and a confrontation with the giant himself.
This unique event is always all the more memorable thanks to its setting high above Chapel Porth, and it’s a great way to experience the mythical side of Cornwall that’s still very much a part of life. The children shriek as the giant slowly looms into view, the mayor begins to shiver with fear and the sound of drums booms around the landscape...it’s hard to describe this event if you haven’t been to it yet so we’ll just say it’s a must-see – and everyone’s welcome.
