Built by Henry VIII to protect the country against potential invasions, the fortress remains one of Cornwall’s great family days out and the views are incredible. This award winning day out has something for everyone, and dogs are welcome throughout the site too.

Highlights of a visit to Pendennis include the recreated Tudor gun room which demonstrates a gun deck in action, and the ever-changing interactive exhibitions. The displays bring the castle’s history to life for all ages, so you’ll soon be imagining its role in conflicts over the years, including its defiance as a royalist stronghold during England’s Civil War.

The Guardhouse is still equipped just as it would have been during the First World War and the interactive section bombards the senses with the sights and sounds of a real battle. If you’re feeling brave you can even experience what it was like to come under attack from the enemy on a World War Two observation post.

It’s not all explosions and gunfire though, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the picnic area outside the castle, and there’s a tea room in the Royal Garrison Artillery Barracks nearby. Visitors can park in the main car park on Castle Drive free of charge, and all surrounding gardens are open to the public too. The castle is also home to an exhibition of George Butterworth’s wartime cartoons which angered Hitler to such an extent that he was put on his hit list.
