The great Devon throwdown

One of my favourite ways to get creative...

We moved house 2 years ago, and I decided that I was going to learn a new skill, partly because I wanted to be a bit more creative, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet new people. In May 2014, I discovered the wonderful Kigbeare Studios & Gallery, after seeing a pottery demonstration at our local May Day fair. I put my name down, booked on my first class, and loved it.

Kigbeare Studios & Gallery is the most tranquil setting for an arty adventure. It’s just on the edge of Dartmoor, about 3 miles from Okehampton. So, if you have a spare day on your Devon getaway, it’s well worth the trip. The gallery is down a very long, tree lined lane, and in typical Devon style, if you’re using a SatNav, it will stop you at a random farmhouse about ¼ of a mile away from your destination!

When you arrive you’re greeted by a beautiful Devon long house, art studios and a fantastic gallery. Our teacher for the morning is Bethan Jones, who works at Kigbeare making beautiful, functional earthenware pots (my house is now full of them!). It’s been a while since my last class, would I still remember how to throw, wedge, centre? I’m sure that watching every episode of the Great Pottery Throwdown means that I’m now a fully-fledged potter! We’ll see!

After a couple of demonstrations, that made throwing look very easy, we all had our own wheel and we got to work. All clay and tools are included as part of the lesson, we were even treated to coffee and homemade lemon cake, so all you need to bring is an apron and a small towel. I always manage to get covered! But that’s all part of the fun.

It took a few attempts to get back in to the swing of things, but by the end of the class I had a couple of bowls that actually looked like bowls! Bethan is on hand to help everyone, or if you feel a bit more confident she will guide you through more complicated pieces. If you’re looking for a fun new hobby, or a morning out with friends whilst on holiday, why not give pottery a go?

Kigbeare Studios & Gallery is open by appointment and hosts classes throughout the year. Please visit for more information.
