Fancy a chilled weekend break (or longer)? Then head on down to Stonerush Lakes near Lanreath, Cornwall. That’s exactly what we did! We being myself and my partner Kim. Straight after work on a Friday evening we threw a few things in the car, set the Satnav and we were off - Cornwall bound!
About an hour and a half’s drive, a bit of arguing with the Satnav and we arrived at Stonerush Lakes, set in a picturesque Cornish valley. The site is home to an array of beautiful cedar lodges and 3 Streamside was to be our home for the next couple of nights.
It was dark when we arrived but the reception at the Old Mill restaurant was well lit and we made our way in to be greeted by Jackie who made us feel most welcome and supplied us with directions to our lodge.
We unloaded the car and made our way into 3 Streamside proceeding to look in every room and cupboard as you do (or is that just me?) Any way it was late and we had brought some food with us to throw in the oven. Cooking time was 25 minutes – just enough time to make good use of the whirring and bubbling hot tub that was beckoning us. A quick change, glass of wine in hand and in we went and ahhh there it was………the big chill or in this case the quite warm bubbling big chill! A little piece of Heaven after a hectic week.
We were up early the next morning and we ventured into Fowey for some breakfast at the Well House tea rooms. Its reputedly the oldest house in Fowey and dates back to around 1430. For the historians that’s older than Joan of Arc and Henry VIII!
All that walking and a thirst had been worked up so we headed towards the riverside and into Haverners Bar and Grill for a beer and a snack. The sun had made an appearance through the clouds so we sat outside and spent a pleasant hour just watching village and river life. Life in a Cornish village is definitely more laid back, very relaxing indeed!
We had a table for two booked at the Old Mill restaurant that evening so after a quick dip in the hot tub we got ready and headed out. We were once again greeted by Jackie who seated us at our table and took the time to run through the menu and the specials board with recommendations. Jackie informed us that all of the produce served is locally sourced.
The menu was a tough choice as everything on it was very tempting and after some pondering I eventually decided on the Belly Pork while Kim opted for the Seafood Tagliatelle. To accompany the meal we chose an excellent Merlot from the wine list. I had forsaken a starter for dessert as I had my eye on the apple and gooseberry crumble served with clotted cream while Kim went for the Sticky Toffee pudding.
The restaurant has a very pleasant atmosphere with a rustic theme and the food served was most enjoyable. All said and done it was a very pleasant evening but the day of walking had caught up with us and it was time to head back to our lovely lodge.
Sunday morning was a relaxed, take your time, laid back type of morning with Kim insisting on making full use of the hot tub one more time while I took a leisurely walk around Stonerush.
It’s a beautiful location set in woodland with the expansive lakes making for stunning surroundings. At night there is absolute minimal light and noise pollution. It’s a place to get away from busy lives and totally relax.
