The surf is great for newbies to the sport and learners, and there\u0026rsquo;s a notoriously friendly surf school there to make things easier. It\u0026rsquo;s worth turning up to Bantham pretty early and spending the day as the private car park isn\u0026rsquo;t the cheapest and charges per visit.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eBigbury Bay may be shallow and sandy, but its natural topography has it pegged as one of the county\u0026rsquo;s best beaches for surfing. Devon\u0026rsquo;s south coast is more famous for its beauty and climate than its waves, but Bantham is one of the area\u0026rsquo;s finest places to bring your board.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough privately owned, Bantham\u0026rsquo;s owners try to keep it as natural as they can and it\u0026rsquo;s remained a picturesque haven for wildlife. There are lifeguards on hand during busy times, but it\u0026rsquo;s such a safe area that many families bathe and swim in the sea on a warm day. Bigbury is a good choice for kite surfers for many reasons, and it\u0026rsquo;s especially worth a visit in a NW. Make sure you choose the right side of the spit facing the island in this wind direction and you\u0026rsquo;ll be in for an experience.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eWatch the spit between Bigbury and Burgh Island at low tide, as you\u0026rsquo;ll be able to launch from either side depending on the direction of the wind. This works best out of season as the area gets incredibly busy during the summer. For the best beach head to Bigbury-On-Sea which is found just to the left of the spit. The beach is a favourite with windsurfers so take care at medium to high tide!\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eBigbury is a south facing beach where any SW direction will generate a large swell, and mast high waves aren\u0026rsquo;t an unusual sight. Watch out for the strong current generated in this area by the River Avon, and also the wind shadow found at low tide in a westerly (caused by Burgh Island). Bigbury-On-Sea Beach is found in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and its water sports lure the adrenalin seekers as well as families throughout the year.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough Bigbury\u0026rsquo;s kite surfing is a big draw, we have to admit that there are also a couple of mouthwatering pubs nearby that always add to its lure! If you head over to Burgh Island the Pilchard Inn is infamous for its food and it\u0026rsquo;s packed with history too.
