Jorvik Viking Centre

Things To Do

Built right on the site of the remains of Viking buildings, the Jorvik Viking Centre takes its visitors back in time to the days when the area was a bustling collection of Viking-age streets. It’s tricky to imagine quite what life was like when Vikings called the spot home more than 1000 years ago, but as you wander the reconstructions of the streets you’ll be able to experience just how it felt to be a resident of Viking-age York.

The remains of the Viking buildings that sit beneath the centre were one of the world’s most significant archaeological discoveries, and audio and video displays along the way bring the findings from the infamous Coppergate dig to life, explaining why the Vikings made York their home, how they lived and even how they met their deaths.

The Coppergate dig ended up lasting for five years, and the Jorvik experience pieces every discovery together to give one of the most fascinating insights into what life was like in the region when the Vikings wandered the streets…and there’s even a ride to make it great fun for the whole family.
