We’ll start describing this little gem of a Whitby beach by telling you the most important thing about it – it’s by far the best vantage point to sit and watch the regatta fireworks! While the crowds line the seafront and squeeze along the pier, the more informed beachgoers arrive on this small sandy beach close to the harbour in good time, stoke a little driftwood fire and enjoy the view.
Anyway, you’ll find Tate Hill Beach on the east side of the river Esk and although it’s smaller than West Cliff Beach it’s very pretty and has everything you need for a great time. It’s sandy, safe and conveniently positioned and it’s easy to access the East pier from it. If you find yourselves in the mood for a quiet walk as the sun sets one evening start here, as you won’t be far from the harbour yet you can enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the Yorkshire coast in all its glory.
You can reach Tate Hill Beach from Church Street, and thanks to its sheltered location it makes a nice little sun trap and dogs are welcome all year round.
