Sandsend isn’t the biggest beach in Whitby, but it’s certainly one of the prettiest. It’s common to see fossil hunters and anglers enjoying the quiet along this sand and shingle beach, but it’s also a safe choice for families.
The paddling and bathing is safe enough for children, and as the beach connects to Whitby sands if you fancy starting a walk here you can wander along the coast for some way without leaving the shore. This three mile walk is a lovely way to enjoy the scenery and spend time by the sea, and it’s popular with dog walkers when the seasonal bans aren’t in force.
There’s a car park next to the beach, and if you take your bikes along you can pick up the Cleveland Trail which offers off-road cycling and some invigorating walks along the tops of the cliffs. This is also a handy beach to spend a day thanks to its amenities, as you’ll find a few shops and public toilets beside it that mean there’s no lengthy trudge in search of drinks and snacks. Some of the local shops stock dinghies which are always a hit with children, and thanks to the safe waters they tend to spend most of their time at Sandsend bobbing about in them.
