Now, if ever a town was made to host an annual canal boat festival it was Skipton. With its historic streets and famous canal the market town takes the perfect backdrop to the annual Skipton Waterways Festival each May. The festival takes place every year for three days, and there’s a different theme for every one. There’s plenty to see and do on dry land if you don’t have a narrow boat to roll up in, including stalls selling local produce, activities for children, rides and live music.
If you want to experience the festival from the water you can book one of the special cruises available in advance, and Pennine Cruisers run illuminated boat cruises for one evening during the festival. If you want to see the spectacle of the boats congregated when the festival closes head to the Skipton Canal Basin for when the boats reconvene after gliding the surrounding waters – the sight of the brightly coloured boats huddled together is always a fantastic one (not to mention a brilliant photo opportunity for the holiday album).
