With an imposing beauty that keeps watch over the city, Ripon Cathedral has a history that dates all the way back to the 7th century. The building cuts an elegant figure against the city’s skyline, and it’s a welcoming place to visit as well as a fascinating one.
The cathedral has welcomed pilgrims for more than 1300 years, and whether you go to worship, to learn or to enjoy the atmosphere and the music, you’ll receive a warm welcome. You’ll find guides on hand between 10am and 4.30pm every day, and they’re always happy to chat about the cathedral and answer any questions.
The church you’ll see today was dedicated in 672, although it’s undergone a few reconstructions since, and the ancient Saxon crypt is the country’s oldest. In fact, it’s the sole part of the original building that stands today. Look out for the wood carvings in the choir stalls that date back to medieval times – they’re rumoured to have inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland.
