If you time your visit to Oxenhope just right you’ll be greeted by the sight of hundreds of people in fancy dress running from one pub to another. The Oxenhope Straw Race is a much-loved tradition in the village, and it all started years ago when two men had a bet that they could race from one pub to another one laden with a bale of straw!
These days, participants get into teams and raise sponsorship money in aid of various charities to complete the course with straw on their backs, and as much of the route’s uphill it’s no mean feat. To make things even more…unusual, the teams always wear fancy dress as they visit each of the village’s pubs, and as people turn out to watch the race in crowds there’s always a fantastic atmosphere in the village.
To date, the race has raised more than £3000,000 for charities, and all money raised is collected by the Straw Race Committee. There are all kinds of other events held throughout the year to raise even more money for the chosen charities than the main race.
