Grassington’s festivals have gained the village something of a reputation as the events capital of Yorkshire, and the annual Dickensian Festival brightens up the winter in Victorian style. Three Saturdays before every Christmas the village winds the clock back to days gone by, and Christmas is the perfect time of year to give the village a Victorian makeover.
The village shops and streets shine with twinkling lights, traditional Victorian stalls appear and tempt passers-by with the smells of roasting treats and villagers wander the cobbled roads in Victorian costume to look the part. Musicians entertain the crowds with live music (from the Victorian period of course) and street entertainers mean there’s always something to stop and watch as visitors roam the village.
The event also means the chance to get some Christmas shopping done before the big rush as the streets are always lined with stalls selling traditional country crafts and handmade items that make unique gifts and stocking fillers. Grassington makes just the backdrop for this popular themed event, and the villagers think of everything to create an authentic Victorian atmosphere.
As the evenings close in and the streets bustle Grassington takes on the appearance of a scene from a Christmas card so visitors get unique photographs as well as an experience to remember.
This year's festival will be held on the weekends of 3rd - 4th and the 10th - 11th December 2016, with events taking place throughout the weekdays in between too.
