Whitsand Bay is just ten miles from Plymouth, and the Torpoint Ferry connecting them makes for a great day out exploring Plymouth’s famous maritime history, bustling shops and scenic Hoe.

Whitsand Bay’s Tregantle Beach (also known as Long Sands) is sheltered by headlands and stretches all the way to Rame Head four miles away. Visitors who wish to walk this seemingly endless beach all the way along should check the tide times. The nearby Tregantle Fort is home to an MoD firing range, so heed must be paid to any warning or red flags indicating live fire.
Freathy Beach, at Whitsand Bay is a popular choice with sun worshippers from nearby Plymouth and the village of Freathy. Although unsuitable for swimming, this beach has its own amenities and is lifeguarded during the summer. Downderry Beach is smaller than Whitsand Bay’s, and is a mixture of sand and shingle. Just five miles from Looe, the beach is about one mile in length. Families should note that the east end of Downderry Beach, which is concealed by rocks, is popular with nudists!
