Our Head of Product Development, Sam Wrigglesworth, recently enjoyed a stay at Surf - one of our newest Newquay holiday apartments - and here's how he found it...

It would be fair to say that my role in the leisure industry over the years has afforded me a great number of wonderful experiences. From secluded woodland lodges in the Scottish Highlands, to picturesque millionaire’s mansions on Lake Windermere – there isn’t much I’ve left to experience in self-catering. But just when you think you’ve seen it all, something jumps out to surprise and thoroughly overwhelm you.

Crantock BeachOn a very warm and sunny afternoon, I made the drive from St Ives, north towards the small but charming village of Crantock in Newquay, where I was to stay at one of our flagship properties, Surf. Being an avid surfer, I had heard of Crantock beach referenced by many others as one of Cornwalls hidden gems. Naturally I was excited beyond words; and with the sun glistening off the bay beside me, my final approach down the winding roads was filled with anticipation for the weekend ahead!

Upon entering the property I was completely taken aback; the entrance hall was filled with natural light, a superb space fit for the most expectant of guests – but this soon paled by comparison, when I stepped in to the open plan living area – the vast glass frontage brought the beach and the bay right in to the room; I couldn’t believe my eyes. I could see the waves breaking and the surfers already enjoying the crisp, clean break which seemed to roll in endlessly (this may also be referred to as Heaven).

To my surprise, knowing how busy the best beaches in Cornwall can be, I was shocked to see that this was indeed only enjoyed by the few, with huge spots of incredible surf completely empty on what was the hottest day of the year so far… Fistral and Watergate at this point would be positively heaving by comparison!

Beautifully furnished, classy and elegant but not ostentatious in the least, I could tell that the owner of this magnificent property knew what they were trying to accomplish here – tasteful took an entirely new meaning throughout the décor. As I explored further, I couldn’t fault the bedrooms and bathrooms either – spotless, contemporary and HUGE.

"As a complete package, this property has literally everything..."

The second downstairs living area immediately set my imagination running; thoughts of summer barbeques stretching out seamlessly from the house in to the landscaped gardens were instantaneous. As a complete package, this property has literally everything – A statement I would happily stake my reputation on.

At this point my group of friends began to arrive, and one by one they followed in my footsteps with a chorus of excited voices as they scurried about the house. It wasn’t long until the wine was flowing, and the barbeque was lit – the perfect first evening played out from there, with great excitement for tomorrow’s first surfing trip.

Sunrise (finally) and I wake to the sound of the ocean below me; pealing back the curtains in the palatial master bedroom to reveal a huge balcony was a real treat – one cup of coffee and a long appreciating gaze later,  I was ready to grab the board and leg-it to the beach. ‘Do I wake everyone up, or keep the waves to myself?’ I thought it best to be kind and bring the others… they are friends after all!!

It took less than 10 minutes to walk the footpath from the front door to the sand, with my board under my arm, the view over the bay whilst I picked my spot and the sun on my back – it really couldn’t have been a lovelier walk. What followed can only be described as the best surfing session of my life – there really is no other way to describe it, and this blog isn’t really supposed to be about surfing (try as I might).

Over the weekend we surfed a further 5 sessions, ventured in to Newquay to shop and eat-out a few times; taking less than 15 minutes by car – the nightlife was excellent fun too; highly recommended for a few well-earned cold ones after a hard day’s relaxation in a millionaire's penthouse!! The local supermarket was just over 5 minutes’ drive, and the property owners left a great info book in the property with ideas on places to go and eat; a thorough read of this ‘manual’ comes highly recommended upon arrival!

But the piece de resistance had to be the pub with one of the best beer gardens in the world, right next door to the property!! Buzzing with walkers, surfers and locals having a good ‘old time of it – the grub was top notch and plentiful too.

Eventually however, like all good things, it had to come to an end. On the Sunday evening, we rode the INCREDIBLE surf one last time and hit the road – I’ve never seen so many sad adult faces. Weeks down the line, the group still talk about that weekend, with every intention of doing it again next year. Of all my very fortunate endeavours from Lands’ End to the Scottish Highlands, my stay at Surf truly stands out above them all – SIMPLY AWESOME!
