Watergate Bay entered the public eye in 2002 when Jamie Oliver chose it as the setting for his restaurant, Fifteen Cornwall. Created as a project to offer opportunities to youths who needed a fresh start, the restaurant provides impressive Italian dishes created by the apprentices themselves.
Beach holidays in Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth have plenty to impress every visitor. The Extreme Academy provides the opportunity to try a range of new and adventurous beach and water-based activities, such as kite surfing, wave skiing, stand up paddle surfing and many more. Both Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth are perfect for surfing for those who prefer the traditional version, and lessons are available at the O’Neill Surf Academy at Watergate Bay.
Mawgan Porth beach is smaller than Watergate Bay’s, and is a perfect part of Mawgan Porth family holidays. Seven miles along the coast from Newquay, Mawgan Porth beach is sandy, easy to reach and close to car parking and toilet facilities. Dogs are permitted throughout the year, and the beach is lifeguarded during the summer. Although also popular for surfing, Mawgan Porth lends itself to beginners at the sport.
When it comes to eating out during a stay in self-catering Watergate Bay holiday cottages, the famous Fifteen Cornwall shouldn’t be missed. With its inspired menus created using local produce, and breathtaking sea views, Jamie Oliver’s project restaurant really is an experience. Fifteen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and closes at midnight, so there is plenty of opportunity to sample the gourmet efforts of the young apprentices. Families should note that children are welcome at Fifteen for breakfast and lunchtimes, although evening mealtimes are adult-only.
Aside from the more high profile restaurant, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth have plenty of locally-sourced choices for the whole family. The Beach Hut beach bar is positioned to overlook Watergate Bay, and is a great choice for informal meals and drinks. When it comes to cuisine during Mawgan Porth holidays, options include several friendly inns, most of which offer striking sea views, and a choice of cafes and restaurants for all occasions.
