Now Knighton’s a pretty peaceful place to visit for much of the year, but if you’re ever around during August you might hear shouts, cries and general mayhem – and that means it’s the annual Knighton Town Crier Festival. The aim of the competition is to seek out the best town crier in the nation and it always attracts the crowds.
Knighton Church Hall is taken over by dozens of town criers in full costume for one day every August, and they shout, cry and boom to battle for the title making this event great fun to watch 9and hear!). The criers make their way along Broad Street behind the Knighton Town Silver Band so everyone gets to see them in all their noisy glory, and the competition continues with a home cry and a themed cry throughout the afternoon.
This is a free event and everyone’s welcome so expect a fantastic atmosphere and traditional entertainment. The hills that surround Knighton echo with the clanging of bells and the shouts of the criers as they try to prove they’re the best in the nation, and many of them travel from all over the UK to be a part of this special event.
