Henllys ValeLet’s start in the Brecon Beacons, as National Parks are always great if you prefer a structured walk with plenty to see. Henllys Vale is home to a series of former lime kilns and their chimney, making this Wales walk an opportunity to see some of the Beacons’ history close up. This walk follows the Afon Twrch, so you’ll see some beautiful wildlife as you go. This is quite an easy walk, and footpaths along it have been improved for easier access recently.

Blackpill to MumblesThe stroll along the coast between Blackpill and Mumbles is one of the most interesting walks in Wales. Following the route of the first ever passenger railway and learn more about the history of Swansea. Another highlight of this walk is the exact area from which Sir Francis Drake took wood to create his famous fleet. You’ll be in for your share of darker heritage too, as what is now the County Hall was the scene of three public hangings, one of which lured more visitors to the bay than almost any other event!

Llangasty BirdhideHere’s one for all you twitchers planning walks in Wales, Llangasty Birdhide is found on the south shore of the beautiful Llangorse Lake and makes a perfect spot to relax and watch the surrounding birds and other wildlife. The area is home to many species of birds, including waders and wildfowl, and the wildflower meadows that sprawl around the bird hide make getting to it an unforgettable walk away from it all. If you try this walk during the summer you’ll be greeted by a carpet of blazing flowers.

The Promenade, BreconIf you’re looking for a Wales walk the whole family can enjoy, head to the pretty Promenade in the market town of Brecon. There’s a smooth, tarmac path which winds beside the river and alongside meadows – so it also makes for a dog-friendly walk in Wales. This walk stretches for around 1.5km, but if you head on through the kissing gates you’ll find an additional 500m to explore. This is a good walk to start with when exploring the Brecon Beacons, as there are plenty of facilities close by, and it’s very easygoing.
