Everybody loves to discover a quiet beach that feels like a forgotten treasure, and Bantham Beach opposite Bigbury is one of them. It may not be the easiest beach to get to but it’s worth it once you do and the surf’s pretty good too. The surf is great for newbies to the sport and learners, and there’s a notoriously friendly surf school there to make things easier. It’s worth turning up to Bantham pretty early and spending the day as the private car park isn’t the cheapest and charges per visit.
Bigbury Bay may be shallow and sandy, but its natural topography has it pegged as one of the county’s best beaches for surfing. Devon’s south coast is more famous for its beauty and climate than its waves, but Bantham is one of the area’s finest places to bring your board.
Although privately owned, Bantham’s owners try to keep it as natural as they can and it’s remained a picturesque haven for wildlife. There are lifeguards on hand during busy times, but it’s such a safe area that many families bathe and swim in the sea on a warm day. You’ll find a surf school at the top of Bantham Beach that’s great for nippers and newbies.
