Tavistock Tourist Information

Description

For those whose idea of the perfect getaway includes picturesque scenery, West Country traditions and nostalgic sights – the small market town of Tavistock is the perfect destination! Market day is still a key part of Tavistock life, and the town still holds a market every Friday – so those who opt for self-catering cottages in Tavistock will have the opportunity to stock up on some treats and essentials for their Devon break. Bedford Square also houses a Farmer’s Market once a fortnight,  once voted the Best Farmer’s Market in the South West.

Tavistock can be dated back to the founding of Tavistock Abbey in AD 961. Amazingly, the ruins of the abbey can still be seen in the town’s centre. Tavistock is famed as the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, and Drake’s Trail is a great way to explore the town with an emphasis on this claim to fame.
