Museum of SomersetLet’s face it, a museum doesn’t always appeal to all of us, but with Taunton’s varied and fascinating history it would be a shame to miss learning more about it in this impressive one. Housed within Taunton Castle, the Museum of Somerset has recently seen a huge redevelopment, so visitors can roam even more galleries in this gripping Taunton attraction. The artefacts inside include a shrunken head, the second largest collection of Roman coins and the Tree of Somerset. Interactive features make the museum child-friendly too, so it’s fun for all ages. |
Hestercombe Gardens
Hestercombe is a spectacular Taunton family attraction, set on the sloping Quantock Hills. Three period gardens cover fifty acres and make Hestercombe an unforgettable place to visit. The Grade I listed Landscaped Garden, Victorian Terrace and Edwardian Gardens make a stunning sight. Once deserted, the famous gardens have now been carefully restored and make a lovely day out for all ages. The 17 century water mill completes the nostalgic feeling, and the attraction is open every day of the year (except for Christmas Day). Gardeners will love the garden shop and plant centre too, and entry to these and the Stables Restaurant is free.

Somerset Cricket MuseumAs all you cricket fans will know, one of the biggest attractions in Taunton is its cricket ground! The town is home to Somerset County Cricket Club AND Taunton Cricket Club, and Somerset Cricket Museum is perfectly placed inside the cricket ground. Somerset Cricket Museum is open Tuesday to Friday between April and October, please check the website for exact dates and times. Please note that only spectators can enter the museum whilst first-class matches are being played. |
Hatch CourtJust a twenty minute drive from Taunton, Hatch Court is well worth venturing a little further afield for. This beautiful home and gardens show Somerset at its best, with historic architecture and a backdrop of stunning scenery. Hatch Court dates back to 1755 and is now home to a modest military museum. The walled vegetable garden and 1820’s stable add to the character of this Bath stone building, and it’s open to the pubic every day between April and September. Although not strictly a Taunton attraction, it’s a must-see if you time your stay right!
