Taunton Literary FestivalSeptember 2011 will see the first ten-day Taunton Literary Festival, and it’s hoped that it will become an annual event in Taunton. The festival programme includes over forty events and over ten days, ranging from talks, to poetry readings and discussions. The festival will run from 15-25 September, and there will be numerous special guests and appearances from the world of literature. Taunton RacecourseFor a different event in Taunton during your holiday, head over to the racecourse and enjoy the races. Taunton Racecourse is one of the county’s more striking locations, so even if you’re not too in to your horse racing it’s a fun day out with fantastic views. Just a short drive from Taunton town centre, the racecourse offers great views of the Blackdown Hills, and you can’t miss the exciting atmosphere of the races. There’s a friendly restaurant too, so if you make a day of it there’s great food onsite.

CricketA game of cricket is a great way to spend a day in Taunton, and it’s a fun experience even if you don’t know much about the game. Somerset County Cricket Club is also home to Taunton Cricket Club, so there are regular matches throughout the season. Please check the official website for dates and matches. The ground seats up to 6,500 fans, so there’s a great atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy. The cricket ground is just a short drive from Taunton town centre too.

The Bridgwater CarnivalNow for An ever-popular regular in the Taunton events diary, the annual Bridgwater carnival! Somerset is renowned for its colourful and vibrant carnivals, but Bridgwater’s illuminations are famed, and often attract crowds up more than 150,000! The carnival takes place every November, and is thought to be the world’s largest illuminated procession. The town of Bridgwater is less than half an hour’s drive from Taunton, so it’s well worth the drive to see this visual feast! The 2011 carnival will be held on Friday 4 November, and 2012 on Saturday 3.
