Cycling the Grand Western Canal

Cycling the Grand Western Canal

Things To Do

If you’re looking for a relaxed and gentle cycling route with beautiful scenery, look no further than The Grand Western Canal. This tranquil cycling route runs alongside a stretch of waterway in the heart of Devon and crosses through the Devon/Somerset border. The trail is entirely off road and is mostly flat, making it the perfect route for families and children looking for a fun yet peaceful day out.

The Grand Western Canal runs for 24 miles and stretches from Tiverton to Taunton, and you can take on as much or as little of the route as you like. Although cycle hire is not available at the country park, Abbotshood Cycle Hire is nearby in Halberton and will provide you with everything needed for your day out. They’ll even deliver your bicycles to the canal side when arranged in advance.

There’s so much to see when exploring this charming and peaceful cycle route. From beautiful local wildlife to horse-drawn barges, this stretch of canal side is really unique. You can even stop along the way for a spot of fishing or canoeing, and there are plenty of places to stop for a drink or bite to eat including tea rooms, pubs and a delightful farm shop.
