Coleridge CottageWith so much natural beauty to admire and inspire, it’s no surprise that this Somerset attraction is the former home of one of our greatest Romantic poets – Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The pretty Coleridge Cottage in Bridgwater was home to the poet for a three year period from 1797. The cottage is open between August and October, and it’s the very spot where Coleridge penned ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, ‘Frost at Midnight’ and ‘Kubla Khan’. Visitors can even sit at the Roamntic’s desk and have a go at penning their own prose with a traditional quill pen!

Weston-Super-Mare BeachWe couldn’t write a page about family attractions in Somerset and leave out the long, sandy beach of Weston-super-Mare! Boasting one of the UK’s longest natural beaches, Weston-Super-Mare has been a firm favourite with visitors to the county for generations. It’s not only a great spot to enjoy some time in the sun, but its size means it hosts regular events all year round. T4 on the Beach, Sand Sculpting and much more can all be found annually at Weston. The beach is safe and clean too. |
Wookey Hole CavesNow for a mysterious Somerset attraction, Wookey Hole Caves! These fascinating caves housed some of our most distant ancestors 50,000 years ago, and they continue to draw us today. The caves have stood for millions of years, and have been the scene of find after find of bones, tools and artefacts long left behind. The river that runs through the caves has made it the source of many a local legend, and early Somerset Pagans believed the water flowed straight from the underworld! In fact, it comes directly from the springs beneath the city...but it’s still intriguing. |
