Where do we start with Powis Castle and Gardens? This National Trust attraction is a foreboding medieval castle and former family seat – and it looms proudly over the famous historic gardens below. Carefully-tended yews hang protectively over the garden’s rare plants and the rather grand layout reflects the styles of Italy and France. Original lead statues dot the landscape, and this all sits in the shadow of the circa 1200 castle that started out as a fortress.
The castle is by no means untouched having been tweaked and altered for more than four centuries, but that only adds to its charm and this is one of the most intriguing family attractions in Knighton. The castle was once owned privately by the Herbert family, and their extensive collections throughout include works of art, tapestries and sculptures – and the best part is that every piece gives a tantalising glimpse into the lives of the people who once called this grand castle home.
Both inside and out, Powis Castle is a fascinating place to spend time and it’s also home to the Clive Museum, a deer park with a history dating back to medieval times and it hosts regular events throughout the year.
