Mothecombe BeachMothecombe Beach is privately owned and is only open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. This is a sandy and clean Plymouth Beach has safe swimming – so it’s suitable for a day out with the children. There are also lots of rock pools to explore, and rocks at each end of the beach creating a reasonable wind shelter. Parking on the nearby road is not permitted between April and September, but there is a field car park nearby for £1.80 per day. There is also a small refreshments shop in this parking area, although there are no other nearby facilities.

Bigbury-on-SeaIf you don’t mind venturing a little further afield during beach holidays in Plymouth, Bigbury-on-Sea in the South Hams has plenty to make the journey worthwhile. Thurlestone SandsA little further along the coast from Bigbury-on-Sea, Thurlestone Sands is owned by the National Trust and is great for water sports, as well as family visits to the seaside! With a wide sandy beach, access to the South Devon Coastal Path and a close nature reserve – Thurlestone Sands is another great day out for those on Plymouth beach holidays. The nature reserve is home to a range of rare birds, so birdwatchers should bring their equipment incase of any sightings! Thurlestone Golf Club overlooks the sea and is set on a nearby cliff top, so golfers on beach breaks may wish to bear this in mind too.
