Trevithick DayCamborne Trevithick Day is another one for the Penzance events list, and it takes place just half an hour’s drive away in Camborne. The event celebrates the area’s history and its reliance on mining over the years. Trevithick Day is always enjoyed by the whole community - including visitors, as the streets of the town close and make way for a host of free events. The traditional dances that highlight this event include the Bal Maidens and Miners Dance in the morning, and of course Trevithick’s Dance in the afternoon.

Lafrowda DayThe Lafrowda Festival starts on 1 July and builds up to Lafrowda Day on 16 July. This is a modern Penzance event which celebrates arts and culture in the Penwith area of the town. The festival aims to promote art to the public with a flurry of creative events and colourful entertainment, so if you’re on the lookout for family events in Penzance during this period you’ll find plenty to see and do. The programme includes street entertainment, stalls, parades and much more in the name of this educational charity.

The Mousehole LightsThe Mousehole Harbour Lights have become legendary throughout the South West, and the twinkling displays are a Penzance event in their own right. The lights will be switched on on Saturday 17 December this year, and from then until Christmas the small fishing port will be a beautiful sight. The lights become more intricate with every year as the community takes to the tradition with gusto, so visitors are treated to flashing, moving and humorous light displays everywhere they look!

Giant Bolster WeekendThe Giant Bolster weekend in St Agnes may not strictly be a Penzance event, but it’s well worth the 40 minute drive north if it falls during your stay. Rumour has it that Bolster the giant once lived in the St Agnes hills, wreaking fear and havoc amongst the villagers. The giant was finally beaten by his love for Agnes, a local girl, who tricked him to his demise, and the event celebrates the end of the legendary giant’s tyranny! The Bolster Pageant always takes place on the Sunday before May Day and includes drummers, a parade through the streets and a confrontation with the giant himself.

Golowan and Mazey DayGolowan is Cornish for ‘the feast of St John’ and so, on 23 June (St John’s Eve) it’s time to celebrate one of the most popular Penzance events. The festival centres around cheery bonfires, and it died out in the 19 century after the introduction of by-laws to discourage it. Happily, the event was revived in 1990 and is still going strong today! The traditional festivities include a Serpent Dance, Mock Mayor Elections, as well as fireworks and a quayside fair. Penzance comes alive as residents display flags and banners throughout the town, and the nearest Friday to 23 June sees the visitors start to flock to the annual event.
