The Furry DanceThe Lympstone Furry Dance brings joy to the streets of the village every summer! The Furry Dance dates back to 1933, the main dance sees residents and visitors alike dress in traditional, brightly coloured costumes and dance through the streets – just as their ancestors have done for generations. As well as many other activities, such as live music, the children’s parade has been revived in recent years, and there is also an annual fairground, market and children’s entertainment.

Exmouth CarnivalThe town of Exmouth brightens every summer with the arrival of the Exmouth Carnival! As well as the cheery carnival itself, the day includes plenty of fun for the whole family. Exmouth Carnival day includes entertainment, activities, lots of opportunity for fancy dress and live music too. If you’re attending the Exmouth Carnival from a Lympstone holiday cottage, it’s probably best not to drive – as many of the roads will be closed off. Exmouth is just one stop on the train, or around an hour’s walk from Lympstone.

Lympstone Sailing SeasonLympstone’s Sailing Club is one of the village’s main draws, with some of the area’s finest sailors sailing from it. Sailing season takes place between April to October, so even those who prefer to stay on dry land can enjoy the sight of the boats in the estuary throughout the warmer months. There are also many winter events at the sailing club throughout the low season, so keep an eye out for these Lympstone events too.

Budleigh Salterton Jazz FestivalLovers of Jazz will be in their element for the Budleigh Salterton Jazz Festival in April 2011. This will be the festival’s first year, and is sure to be the main Lympstone event for music lovers! The artists to perform at the festival include The Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra, Elaine Delmar, Ken Peplowski and Roy Williams with the Craig Milverton Trio, Al Swainger, Nick Millward, and The Festival All Star Band! The event runs from 23 April until the 25, and tickets will need booking in advance.

Christmas Day SwimOne of the area’s most popular events is also the strangest! Hundreds brave the cold for the annual Christmas Day Swim at Exmouth Beach, and even more turn out to watch the spectacle. The crowds gather on the Beach and jump in for a quick dip while the crowds watch. The swim takes place near the clock tower on the main Exmouth Beach, and whether its dry, wet, icy or sunny those who take part will not be deterred from their annual plunge! It can be difficult to park close to the seafront on Christmas Day, so it’s best to walk.
