As family attractions go, Elan Valley really is one of a kind. This 72 mile landscape of wide open space is broken up by gushing, roaring dams that can be seen for miles and look spectacular. The dams and reservoirs are a stunning feat of Victorian engineering and they only make wandering the countryside that surrounds them more exhilarating.
The valley is just under an hour’s drive from Knighton, but with its dramatic landscape and stunning views you’ll be glad you made the journey. Take a picnic and wander beside one of the vast reservoirs or venture off the beaten track for awhile and walk some of the surrounding woods with their sleepy waterfalls and historic landmarks. Some choose to take the opportunity to fish, and others take to their bikes and enjoy the views on two wheels – anything goes in Elan Valley and however you enjoy it you’ll be compelled to see more.
The dams that make this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so unique provide Birmingham with clean water, just as they’ve done for more than a century. It may seem hard to imagine while you’re stood in the peaceful valley but every drop in front of you will make its way to the city, and there’s no need for the water to be pumped thanks to the elevated position of the valley – clever stuff isn’t it?
