It’s that time of the month when many of us are falling into a bit of a New Year slump, so here at Blue Chip Holidays we’ve been having a think about the best things about this (somewhat quiet!) period. There may not be many parties or gifts involved, but it’s the perfect chance to make the most of the countryside and unwind before the year gets busy...

Cosy meals
The South-West is dotted with country pubs, and finding a cosy corner to sit and chat about your plans for the year is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Most rural pubs serve up filling food that won’t stretch your budget, and dogs are often more than welcome inside.
Storm watching
It may sound strange but there’s something invigorating about watching a storm by the sea, and Newquay is one of the UK’s most popular spots to enjoy impressive weather! Winter storms not only make powerful sights, but the weather following them is usually sunny – so you get the best of both.
Dog walks
Aaaaah, now who doesn’t feel cheered by the sight of their best friend’s wagging tail?! Treat him to some long strolls while you enjoy the peace and quiet, and you can work off some of those festive pounds at the same time!
Views

Speaking of strolls, we think the UK is home to some of the world’s most stunning views. Think Lulworth Cove, the ancient sights of Cornwall and rugged Devon...no matter what you’re into there’s a South West view to take your breath away.
Wintry photographs
Here’s a nice idea, take your loved ones and a camera up to Dartmoor and capture some memories to last, well, forever! The ever-changing Dartmoor scenery makes the perfect backdrop for family photographs, and it’s a lovely escape from it all too.
Attractions
As spring rolls around and things start to come to life there’s even more good news, many of the family attractions extend their opening hours from March. You’ll also find that the National Trust re-open many of their properties, so get in before the summer crowds.
Wildlife
Although the region has more than its share of wildlife, the summer visitors may not get to see it in all its glory. Those who enjoy an early break in the South West will see the first carpets of flowers in the woods, and if you check where to look – rare birds and breeds throughout the area.

Half-term events
With the February half-term looming on the horizon there are all kinds of family-friendly events to book up. Look out for our list of the best ones next week to make the most of the first school break this year.
Lighter evenings
The evenings are already getting that little bit lighter, and doesn’t it make the day feel longer? Roll on the clock change so that we can revel in the longer days, evening walks and all those festivals the South West hosts.
All access beaches
Finally, here’s one of the best things about this season, the dogs have their run of many of the sandy beaches across Devon, Cornwall and Dorset until Easter. There’s nothing better than watching your pet let off steam beside the sea, so make the most of it!
