A rare chance to see Yarmouth in all its colourful maritime glory, the Old Gaffers Festival sees Yarmouth’s harbour fill with gaff rigged vessels as they descend on the town for one weekend every May.
There’s always plenty to entertain throughout the resort over the weekend, and one of the event’s highlights is the Old Gaffers race out on the Solent on the Saturday. Grab yourself a spot amongst the crowds on the shore, pick your favourite and cheer them on with the rest of the spectators – there’s always a fantastic atmosphere and this is one for the whole family.
There’s always a race on Sunday morning too, and it starts at the Royal Solent Yacht Club so there’s plenty of opportunity to see the vessels in all their glory out on the water. The weekend also includes live entertainment in the streets, live music, classic vehicle demonstrations and exciting lifeboat demonstrations, so it’s always a packed programme with something for everyone.
The continental market that lines the streets means no visitors will go hungry (good luck resisting the wafting scents and flavours of cooked meats and sweet treats…) and the McGaffers beer tent will join the fun by holding one of the Wight’s largest real ale festivals throughout the weekend.
