Shanklin Beach has always been a favourite with families looking for a day that’s all about sand, buckets and spades and ice cream. This safe sandy beach ticks all the boxes for sunny days on the sand as a family and its clear waters make it one of the Isle of Wight’s finest beaches.
The shape of the bay means the beach is shielded from the wind, and as it’s also backed by Dunnose Point it’s a dramatic and picturesque spot to take some time out. So that’s scenery, sand and location sorted – all you need now is a view to take your breath away. How about the looming cliffs over at Luccombe and the landscape of St Boniface Downs in the distance? And while mum and dad sit back and enjoy the setting there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained.
There’s a pitch and putt course beside the beach, as well as children’s amusements (well it wouldn’t be a proper dad at the seaside without them). There’s a handy lift which takes people up to the cliffs to enjoy the views from the best vantage point, but those with the energy can make their way up via a flight of steps. Now all you need is an easy way to reach the beach, and there’s a land train that runs between the town centre and the village throughout the day.
