With calm waters and hundreds of metres of shallow shelving Bembridge is a popular spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Because the water is often flat it’s a nice place to hone your skills or get started in either water sport, and it’s rare to visit the beach without seeing dozens of kites on the horizon.
Bembridge is a real find during a stay on the island, as it’s one of the Wight’s most naturally beautiful spots – and it has the perfect conditions for novice kitesurfers to boot. To experience the wind conditions at their best, head to Bembridge when there are Easterly and North Easterly winds as they create a gentle swell with a consistent wind speed. If you time your visit to Bembridge with a neap tide you’ll find an even bigger stretch of flat and shallow water to make things even easier.
Watch out for the current that flows from the harbour on a falling tide as it can be very powerful, and kitesurfers are advised to avoid the channel of deep water indicated by the green and red buoys to the west of the beach. The beach can be very busy during the summer and there are kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons held at Bembridge throughout the year.
