Description

Golden Hill Fort is situated within 50 acres of Golden Hill Country Park. Originally built in 1863 in a distinctive hexagonal shape, which is elevated 60 metres above the North West coast of the Isle of Wight. This spectacular Grade I listed building has now been beautifully converted into 18 luxury houses.  Ideally located on the Western edge of the island it is the perfect place to visit many Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The developers have succeeded in preserving the fort's historic and architectural significance and maintained many original features whilst adding the latest in modern conveniences. Internally, the property offers brick barrel vaulted ceilings flooded with coloured LED mood lighting, underfloor heating with solid oak floors and high quality built-in appliances. Externally, the communal rooftop gardens (approximately 5,500 square metres), is where guests can enjoy stunning panoramic 360 degree views across the Solent, English Channel and countryside. These are the only landscaped rooftop gardens on a Grade I listed building in the country. The central courtyard is where the parking spaces are allocated and features a large water fountain.

The fort is situated near local tourist attractions such as the rugged white cliffs of Freshwater Bay, the multi-coloured sandstone cliffs of Alum Bay and the famous landmark Needles Rocks. Footpaths, bridleways and horse riding are on your doorstep plus an 18-hole golf course which is located on the downs above Freshwater.

Local shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes are close by in Freshwater, Yarmouth or Totland. Colwell Bay is the nearest family beach and is a fifteen minute walk away, while the popular surfing beach of Compton Bay is a short drive along the coast. The West Wight Sports Centre, complete with swimming pool is based in Freshwater, perfect for entertaining the whole family.

Owned by the English Heritage, Yarmouth Castle was the last coastal defence built by the tyrannical Henry VIII, and it wasn’t finished until after he died in 1547. These days, the castle is used by visitors as a picturesque picnic...

The Well House, Golden Hill Fort

A Victorian fort converted into apartments, what a splendid idea. We booked a short Christmas/New Year break here a mixed group of family members in a four bedroom apartment. The accommodation comprised a large through lounge/dining room with under floor heating, large, extremely well appointed, kitchen, utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer and loo, one master bedroom with en suite (complete with its own 160 foot deep glass topped well), one double with shower room and two twins with shower rooms. The apartment is divided up so that the lower floor is all bedrooms which are traditionally heated. The fort is accessed through an electronic security gate and cars are parked in the inner courtyard around the fountain. Everything is provided, there are plenty of towels and an abundance of warm bedding. The interior is very new with multi coloured lighting hidden in the tops of the walls and the vaulted brick ceiling has been made into a feature, cracking. Go up to the roof terrace and look out to sea in three directions. There are sitting areas and BBQ stands and I suspect that in the summer this would be the place to spend a spectacular evening relaxing. It was excellent value for money and our "caretaker" couldn't have been more helpful.

The Well House, Golden Hill Fort

Brilliant! Thanks very much, what an experience! Lovely living upside down and the outside space is breath taking, lovely apartment, well provisioned. Fantastic roof garden. Would be even better in nice weather! I could quite happily live here permanently. Thank you for a wonderful break. Love the design, would love to come back a second time.

The Well House, Golden Hill Fort

Great combination of comfort and nostalgia in a beautiful setting. We had a brilliant celebration lunch at the George in Yarmouth. Off to Carisbrook Castle with the kids today.
