Dunsdon National Nature ReserveThe Devon Wildlife Trust Dunsdon National Nature Reserve is another great spot for a walk in Holsworthy, and it is set apart from the other reserves in the area by its examples of Culm Grassland. This heathy pasture is only found in the west Devon area and gains a distinctive marshy texture from the geology of the terrain, so there’s a fact to take home to your friends! Although boggy in appearance, the benefit of Culm Grassland is that it produces stunning wild flowers, so look out for blazing blooms in the area.

Hatherleigh Circular WalkPick up the Ruby Trail to discover the real gems of Devon, and try the 4 mile walk from the market town of Hatherleigh. The town is also on the Tarka Trail, so you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled for the red Ruby Country waymarkers as you go. It is worth noting that this walk includes 13 stiles, so it is fairly challenging and you’ll need sturdy footwear to tackle the famous Culm Grassland along the way! This is another Holsworthy walk with an emphasis on wildlife, and the quiet open route is perfect for dog owners.

Hallwill Junction Nature ReserveSet in the village of Hallwill Junction, close to Holsworthy, Hallwill Junction Nature Reserve is a fantastic Holsworthy walk and day out combined! The nature reserve is set around a disused railway line and is home to all kinds of wildlife. The nature reserve centres around a flat path made from boardwalks, so the walk is a good one for those with pushchairs or wheelchair users as it is very flat. The walk will take around an hour, and both forks of the path lead to dead ends so you will need to retrace your footsteps.

Thorndon Cross to Venn GateFor a Holsworthy walk that’s perfect for exploring the famous Ruby Country, the bridleway between Thorndon Cross and Venn Gate welcomes walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and much of it is smooth enough for pushchairs too. To start the walk at Thorndon on the A3079, pick up the bridleway and head north. One of the best advantages of this Ruby Country walk is the unbeatable views in each direction, you’ll see Dartmoor behind you, Exmoor to the east and Bodmin Moor to your west! Animal lovers will be treated to possible sightings of rabbits, ponies, deer, cattle and even buzzards along the bridleway, so please make sure dogs are kept under control along the way. If you’re feeling daring, take one of the paths that branch off from the main bridleway ans many of these lead you on a circular, longer route.
