About Weymouth & Portland

Weymouth & Portland tourist information

  • Town and island rich in heritage and historical significance
  • Dramatic Jurassic coast and island scenery
  • Fabulous natural and sea life attractions

Weymouth town and Portland island are steeped in history. From Roman Galleys to Spanish Galleons the harbour and Island have seen more than their fair share of naval history and Royal patronage. While Henry VIII contented himself building forts to stave off foreign invasion, George III made Weymouth his summer holiday residence, attracting many wealthy ladies and gentlemen to the fashionable seaside town, and influencing its architecture leaving many magnificent buildings, statues and landmarks.

Blessed with beaches that range from the pebble rich 18 mile Chesil Beach tombolo, to Weymouth Beach’s sandy shores, Weymouth and Portland have a great choice of places to visit and enjoy in both the hot summer months and the wild winter weeks. Add this to miles of stunning Jurassic coastline, a great range of family friendly attractions and a good choice of museums, and you have a surprisingly rich range of activities to keep you busy during your stay in the area.

Full Property Description

Millstream Cottage is a charming detached cottage in the pretty village of Sutton Poyntz.  It is set in beautiful Dorset countryside just a few minutes’ drive from both the bustling Georgian seaside resort town of Weymouth and the dramatic Jurassic World Heritage Coast.

With countless beaches, wonderful walking and hiking, fossil-hunting, diving, sea fishing, rock-pooling, swimming, sailing and windsurfing all very close by, Millstream Cottage is the ideal base for a relaxing family holiday.

Internally the cottage is furnished to a high standard throughout. Externally, the garden is perfect for al fresco dining.  The cottage sits directly alongside the much-photographed millstream in the heart of Sutton Poyntz, which lies at the foot of chalk hills, overlooked by the famous Osmington White Horse and within walking distance of Overcombe Beach. The village has a busy pub with good food.  Convenience stores and restaurants are nearby.

Weymouth – which boasts some of the finest sailing waters in Europe – is only a short drive away and has lots to offer, from family fun to sophisticated evenings out. The town centre has plenty of well-known high street shops, a cinema and an abundance of cafes, restaurants and bars, while the vibrant, historic harbour is a great place for eating, drinking and people-watching.  The award-winning sea front, with its calm swimming waters, huge sandy beach and panoramic views of Portland and the Jurassic Coast, is perfect for young families.

“Excellent location in a very pretty village. The cottage is beautiful and is very close to Weymouth. Nice enclosed back garden too!” Sue Chillingworth, July 2013
“What a fantastic house and location! A beautiful stream and picturesque willow trees, postcard houses and wonderful town in Weymouth. Just as we arrived the weather cleared and we got 25 degrees centigrade days and clear blue skies as well. The Lions won in Australia, Murray won Wimbledon and England got ahead in the Ashes. Can’t ask for much more!!! The house itself is great and coming from our new home in Australia and needing to house extra family members it was perfect (and safe!) – particularly the annex, the garden for the kids, the ensuite etc. all meant that everyone had their own space and areas. Mr. Delaplanque was also very helpful in every way and the Information Book was useful too. All up 10/10!!” Monti and Taylor families, July 2013.
“A lovely little cottage in a stunning situation. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay here – thank you. Glorious beaches and so many walks to do! The lady we met (we were early) was so lovely too.” Flowers family, June/July 2013.
“Wow! What an idyllic cottage set in quiet, tranquil part of the world. A nice welcome (pack) on our arrival! Both children have enjoyed feeding the ducks every day. Jessica has named them all! Millstream Cottage is just a short car journey away from Weymouth: so much to do – beach, donkey rides. All in all well worth every penny, a lovely home-from-home cozy cottage.” McKee family, May 2013.
“Thanks so much. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our all-too-brief stay in this beautiful cottage and beautiful place. We’ve loved the stream and the ducks, the pub and the countryside, the seascapes and the ice cream. The cottage was all we hoped it would be!” Janet, Jack, Judie, Els, May & Lizzie, May 2013.
“Much appreciated muffins & milk, tea, coffee on arrival. Many thanks! Wonderful cottage and surrounding area. Only drawback was my ‘man flu’! Would recommend the Sealife Centre for families and Lulworth Cove for walks and scenery! We’ve had a blessed time away from the rat race and are going back reluctantly!” Matthews family (junior), April 2013.
Lovely, well-equipped cottage in such a pretty location. Had a great week, mostly sunny although bitterly cold. We even had snow!! Enjoyed visiting Portland Bill, Weymouth, Poole, Wareham and Swannage. The Springhead was a good place to eat, but the Smugglers Inn at Osmington Mills was even better – probably best to book. Altogether a great place to stay.” Yates family, March/April 2013.
“Location, location, location: clear running stream, pond, ducks, peaceful village and lovely countryside – it’s like going back in time! Romantic old cottage to stay in and a much appreciated welcome pack waiting for us when we arrived. Only drawback was the cold weather but we are grateful to God for a lovely holiday.” Matthews family (senior), April 2013.
“Beautiful cottage and location. Very well equipped. Welcome pack very much appreciated. A peaceful and relaxing holiday, would definitely come again. Great dog walks including our daily morning walk to Bowleaze Cove, stopping off at the beachside café for a hot cuppa and a bacon & egg bap. Pub opposite is thoroughly recommended for food and is very welcoming: Pie & Pint Night (Wednesday) should not be missed. Hope to return next year and thank you very much for a lovely holiday.” Nicki & Steve Evans and Lexi (chocolate Labrador), March 2013.
“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Millstream Cottage. It was everything that I expected an old cottage to be. We were a party of 4 adults and 2 small children and found it to have plenty of space for us. The welcome pack was a nice touch with some of the essentials provided. We found plenty to do in the local area with the children despite being a really cold weekend – we even had snow! All in all an excellent weekend and we certainly hope to return in the future.” Mr & Mrs Drisse + Ruby, March 2013.
“Thank you. I had a perfect birthday weekend with my family. Most deffo stay again!” Maggie, March 2013
“We had a fantastic time. The cottage was so lovely. The cottage was very warm and cozy. The bedrooms were very nice. The village is great and the surrounding scenery was so beautiful. We did some brilliant walks and the weather was great. Thank you.” Louisa, Paul, Ben, Antonella, Rebekah, Daniel, February 2013.
“We had a fantastic weekend. On arrival we were greeted with tea, coffee and milk to get us started. Thank you very much! The weather was very wet but managed to get to Weymouth and have a walk on the beach. Plenty of room for six adults and three children. The kids loved feeding the ducks and we enjoyed a long walk on Sunday morning. The pub across the road is very welcoming – kids and dogs are allowed and the carvery was very nice. Many thanks for a great stay. We enjoyed our pre-Christmas celebrations.” Marie, Mark, Michelle, Mark, Mia, Sam, Zac, Geraldine, Paul and Jake the dog, November 2012.
“We had a lovely stay – cozy kitchen and lounge, plenty of room for us all. Great location and beautiful village. Loved the ducks in the stream. Very pretty area and accessible to all sorts of nice places. Quiet and peaceful – the area was a definite hit with everyone. Weymouth was lovely, as was Dorchester and Chesil Beach – lots of things to see and do. Thanks for making it a great weekend away! Pastries a nice touch on arrival and it was very cozy and warm.” Matt, Cat, Emma, Tom, Vic, Caroline and babies Ella & Erin, November 2012.
“Lovely location, nice welcoming goodies provided and the cottage was warm and cozy when we arrived, much appreciated after a long, rainy drive down! Lovely carvery at The Springhead, lots of peaceful scenery to explore, didn’t cover half of it so will be back! Weymouth is very nice, the south harbor area especially. Very pleasant, relaxing week. Thank you!!” Barber and Williamson families, November 2012.
“Wonderful weekend; great location; great fire – very cosy; lots of fun trying to get into and out of the drive; love the ducks; thank you for the bread.” Bailey, October 2012.
“All had a wonderful time. Loved the cottage and the area. Thank you.” Cox family, September 2012.
“We have had a fantastic holiday at Millstream Cottage. It’s a beautiful village and the ducks in the millstream have been a major hit with our three year old, Phoebe. Plenty to do in Weymouth and the surrounding area. The cottage more than covered our needs and was a lovely place to stay. We will love to come back! Thank you for a lovely holiday.” Tipping family, September 2012.
“We’ve had a lovely stay here. Lovely area, lovely cottage – we hope to return in the future.” Ford, Wittington, Wilkinson families, September 2012.
“Lovely village and cottage is perfect.” Nicholls family, August 2012.
