About Exmoor & Country

Exmoor tourist information
  • Dramatic towering coastline
  • Great walking and riding
  • Unique towns and villages

Exmoor straddles the Devon and Somerset border along the Atlantic coast and contains one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in the country. The South West Coast Path provides a challenging hike along the hogback cliffs, but the views across the water to the Welsh coast more than compensate for any burning thighs. The coast is not the only walking on offer. The moor itself is largely uninhabited and is riddled with footpaths and bridleways allowing visitors to explore the unique landscape.

Most visitors stay in one of the many towns and villages around the edge of the moor and can choose between small coastal resorts, such as Lynton and Lynmouth, enjoying precarious locations nestled along the cliffs, or quaint inland villages like Winsford, Dulverton or Exford.

Full Property Description

An attractive local village

Chulmleigh is a Saxon hilltop village made up of thatched cottages, traditional pubs and a small collection of shops including a butchers, bakers, deli Spar, a farm shop and newsagents. There is a kids play park and dining options consist of three pubs in the town, a cosmopolitan restaurant and an Indian restaurant/takeaway, while the mobile fish and chip van on a Thursday is highly recommended.  Parking in the town is free if you don't feel up to the 1 mile walk up into the village.

A peaceful and beautiful part of Devon

Interestingly enough the whole of Chulmleigh town centre is now a conservation area and the rich grassland found here is home to the largest population of otters in any natural area in England. Chulmleigh Parish has also been identified as an Area of Rural Tranquillity along with being designated as an Area of Great Landscape Value.

The area provides access to an abundance of leisure activities including walking, cycling, fishing, golf and horse riding along with a number of historic houses and gardens in the vicinity. Guests can enjoy the best of coast and country with Dartmoor and Exmoor nearby, as well as the North Devon coast in one direction and the cathedral city of Exeter in the other, all within an hour’s drive.  The cottage has detailed area information for guests ensuring they make the most of their holiday.

Also in the Area

Just a short drive, around 6 miles, from Park Mill Farm Cottages guests are invited to experience the range of luxurious facilities on offer at Highbullen Golf and Country Club.

For those of an active nature visitors can choose from:

  • Golf – award winning course offering views over Dartmoor and Exmoor
  • Pool, Jacuzzi and fitness suite
  • Tennis – indoor and outdoor including grass courts
  • Indoor bowls

If a more relaxed pace suits you then the range of facilities and packages on offer include:

  • Indian head massage
  • Reflexology
  • Facial, manicure and pedicures
  • Aromatherapy and therapeutic massages

Fees apply to the above activities, please call our bookings team for further information.

Fishing at Park Mill Farm

"This is an accommodating little river in a lovely Devon valley where time really does seem to stand still."
Mike Weaver, Trout And Salmon magazine, Feb. 2009.

There are two rivers (The Little Dart and The Huntacott) running through the property and a private fishing lake where guests can enjoy free fly and coarse fishing and catch Brown Trout, Rudd, Chubb, Roach, Tench and Carp. There is also complimentary fishing in the rivers where Brown Trout, Sea Trout and Salmon can be caught together with Course fish.

On site at Park Mill Farm

The Park Mill Farm cottages are situated in a magical riverside setting, less than a mile from Chulmleigh centre, with 20 acres of lush fields, woods and parkland where you are free to roam along with the abundant wildlife.  From the viewing area on top of the hill with bench, to the river and lakeside areas, there is plenty to explore and find a perfect picnic spot.  There are benches throughout the site.

There is a communal barbecue area with tools provided, a summer house with books, DVD’s area information, a payphone and even wellies!

In 2010, Park Mill was featured in The Sunday Times 'Britain's Cosiest Christmases' feature.

Superbly Appointed Cottages

All cottages have natural slate flagstones throughout ground floors while the upper floors all have solid oak flooring. All doors and window frames are attractive solid timber and many windows have deep window seats and most look out over fields and farmlands.

Under floor heating and hot water is provided by a ‘ground source heat pump’, an eco friendly “green” system. Waste water is cleansed and disposed of through a special water treatment plant.

Each cottage has a working fire with a basket of wood provided on arrival (further bags of wood can be purchased locally.

Internet access is also available for a small charge on a weekly, daily or hourly basis.

The Smithy

A beautiful period barn conversion that has been sympathetically converted to provide a tasteful and unique holiday home. The Smithy has retained many original features and has high quality furniture, kitchens and bathrooms that are in keeping with the age of the property.

Original beamed, vaulted ceilings with galleried features create a light, airy and spacious feeling whilst ‘wood burning’ stoves in each cottage also make them an appealing rural retreat for cosy winter breaks.

Note: The Smithy has a double connecting door opening into its neighbouring cottage, Riverside Cottage, so that they may be booked together for larger groups. These doors will be securely locked if not requested.

For larger groups, all of the Park Mill Farm Cottages can be booked together to sleep 18.
