Exmoor straddles the Devon and Somerset border along the Atlantic coast and contains one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in the country. The South West Coast Path provides a challenging hike along the hogback cliffs, but the views across the water to the Welsh coast more than compensate for any burning thighs. The coast is not the only walking on offer. The moor itself is largely uninhabited and is riddled with footpaths and bridleways allowing visitors to explore the unique landscape.

Most visitors stay in one of the many towns and villages around the edge of the moor and can choose between small coastal resorts, such as Lynton and Lynmouth, enjoying precarious locations nestled along the cliffs, or quaint inland villages like Winsford, Dulverton or Exford.

Full Property Description

Homecroft is a traditional property located in the beautiful Mid-Devon area of Cheriton Fitzpaine. The property enjoys breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside and boasts a large heated swimming pool that is available between June and August, making Homecroft the ideal base for a relaxing holiday.

The gardens are spectacular, particularly at night when tastefully located outside lighting adds to the ambience. There is also a large “fire-pit” for outside parties and barbecues. The house is designed for outdoor family summer living with a very large wisteria covered patio/ deck overlooking the swimming pool and gardens, which is accessed through the equally large convivial farm house style kitchen. There is good quality, comfortable, outdoor garden furniture both on the patio and at the fire pit for easy, stress-free, outdoor use.

The two acres of gardens contain two different styles; one country cottage plantsman’s garden and the other a fenced off field /orchard area which contains geese and hens. If guests wish they can collect the eggs for their own use. There are a wide variety of fruit trees and bushes: figs: apples; cherries; walnuts; quinces; greengage as well as more traditional supplies of strawberries, gooseberries and raspberries. Guests are welcome to pick the fruit for their own use when in season.

Internally the property boasts a large games cellar room (40 feet by 20 feet) complete with bar, pool table, air hockey table and a selection of more than 40 rainy day or family games. The cellar is accessed down stairs from the kitchen but also has its own external door to the garden.

Homecroft overlooks the doomsday-book village of Cheriton Fitzpaine which is full of eleventh to fifteenth century houses. The village has two pubs-one of which hails from the thirteenth century- along with the longest thatched house in England. The village has a post office and there is an excellent farm shop nearby full of locally sourced high quality produce.

A short drive away is the historic market town of Crediton, ideally positioned for Exmoor and Dartmoor and only seven miles from the Cathedral city of Exeter. Crediton hosts a monthly farmers market where you can find an array of local products and gifts.

In the summer it is not unusual to have a wide range of wild life passing through the grounds; badgers, foxes, deer, hares and squirrels. There are numerous excellent dog walks around the property of varying distances, both cross-country on designated footpaths and on beautifully scenic, quiet country lanes. Maps of walks with a pub en-route can be supplied by the owners on request.

Please note:

- There is a £500 refundable security deposit on all bookings.  

- Homecroft has more than 3 acres of land in a very rural location. The Owners will occasionally visit the ground and are happy to deal with any additional requests guest may have. Homecroft is a welcoming home for animals.

- This property is unable to accept short breaks between July and September. During this period only 7 night stays are available.

Living

Kitchen

  • Spacious, cheerful kitchen situated on the ground floor overlooking the walled herb garden on one side and the swimming pool on the other.
  • Features a four oven Aga, fridge and dishwasher.
  • Die Dietrich electric oven.
  • Full range of utensils including a microwave, toaster and kettle.
  • Furnished with a sofa and two armchairs.
  • The dining area features a large former ships table with seating for ten. Further seating can be accommodated by means of bar stools around the central kitchen island.
  • Separate utility room features a washing machine, iron and vacuum cleaner.

Sleeping

Bedroom one

  • Situated on the first floor with views over the church, village and hills to Dartmoor.
  • Furnished with a super king-size bed, fitted treble wardrobes, chest of drawers, two bedside cabinets and two fitted wall lamps.
  • En-suite to bedroom one features a bath, wc and wash basin.

Bedroom two

  • Situated on the ground floor.
  • Benefits from a large window seat overlooking the garden.
  • Furnished with three single beds (one of which has an additional pull out bed), fitted wardrobe, chest of drawers, three bedside cabinets and three lamps.

Bedroom three

  • Situated on the first floor overlooking the rear garden.
  • Furnished with a double bed, fitted double wardrobe, chest of drawers, two bedside cabinets and three lamps.

Bedroom four

  • Situated on the ground floor overlooking the garden on three sides.
  • Furnished with a double bed, fitted double wardrobe, chest of drawers and three beside cabinets with lamps.

Bedroom five

  • Situated on the first floor overlooking the patio and front garden.
  • Furnished with a single bed, double wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinet and lamp.

Bedroom six

  • Situated on the ground floor.
  • Furnished with twin beds, an armchair, two sofas seating six and a selection of bean bags.
  • Large selection of books in various locations around the house for all tastes for use whilst resident.

 

Please note: the house comfortably sleeps thirteen and there is an additional futon in the cellar. Beds may be re-arranged to suit sleeping arrangements on request.

Bathroom

  • Situated on the first floor.
  • Features a bath, bidet, wc, wash basin, mirror and shaver point.
  • En-suite to bedroom one features a bath, wc and wash basin.

  • The property is accessed via steps from the wooden barn enclosed yard and there are two flights of stairs within the property.

  • Features a stone walled fire pit and barbeque ideal for al fresco dining.
  • Heated outdoor swimming pool – (14 meters by 7 meters) available between June and end of August. The ambient temperature is approximately 65 to 70 degrees fahrenhiet.
  • Fruit picking available on arrangement – season dependent.
  • Car parking in barn enclosed yard for up to six cars.
  • A walled herb garden to the rear of the property with a covered goldfish pond.
