What’s your favourite thing about Portland? Its coastline? The walks? The people or the pubs? Well whatever it is, it’s time to celebrate it with the festival of the year. Celebrate the spirit of Portland at the Spirit of Portland Festival. The aim behind the festival is to mark Portland’s maritime heritage and culture, and everyone’s invited to enjoy a whole variety of special events.
The programme’s packed with everything from singing, live music and dance, talks on the area, guided walks and even a firework display out on the water – so there’s something for every kind of visitor. For those of you who like your festivals energetic there’s also a water raft race, open water swimming and extreme sports, and over at The Jailhouse Café they’ll be showing old films of Portland on Thursday from 2 – 4pm.
On Friday there’ll be a tea at Jubilee Hall with a World War 2 theme (so get ready to sing along to those wartime classics), and the Prison Museum will be open to visitors throughout the festival. If you’ve visited Portland before you’ll know that it’s the kind of resort where anything goes, from kitesurfing the infamous Chesil Beach to exploring the legacy left behind after the action of 2012, and the festival’s aimed at every community and all ages.
