Kitesurfing at Portland Harbour

Kitesurfing at Portland Harbour

Things To Do

As the world saw in 2012, there are few watersports that Portland Harbour doesn’t lend itself to, and kite surfing is no different. The world’s third largest natural harbour is one of the most popular spots to kite surf thanks to its safe flat waters and clean winds.

On most days you’ll find south westerly winds once offshore, but they’re clean winds blowing fresh from the ocean and gaining momentum along Chesil Beach. In fact, they create flatter conditions than you’ll find in any other kite surfing location and the water is knee deep for half a mile at low tide, making this one of the safest spots to improve your skills.

No matter how safe the conditions there’s always the risk of your kit blowing out or becoming stranded if the wind drops off, and many take advantage of the kite retrieval service provided by Weymouth Watersports. They are located in the perfect vantage spot to notice anyone who is unable to get back in or has lost their kit immediately, so kite surfers can enjoy making the most of this fantastic location with a little extra reassurance in case of anything going awry.

Do you fancy trying something a little bit different during a kite surfing holiday in Dorset? Try speed kite surfing close to the annual Weymouth Speed Week, and pick up your board from Weymouth Watersports who produced one of the boards used in the event last year. Kite surfers need a permit to surf at Portland Harbour, so please make sure you pick one up before you arrive.
