There aren’t too many opportunities to see heavy horses these days, and the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park and Rescue Centre is the only one in the UK today. The park is home to some of the most endangered breeds of heavy horse, and it strives to give them the best quality of life whilst teaching visitors all about their place in history and agriculture.
A day at this attraction is packed with talks, displays of the horses at work and tours of the park. All visitors are offered free rides on the heavy horse wagons, and there are also rides on tractors and trailers available so that they can experience what it’s really like to live and work on a farm. The park is home to more than twenty rescued horses as well as a selection of other farm animals that are always happy to greet friendly visitors. These include donkeys, sheep, rabbits, miniature ponies, goats and many more.
The recreation of a blacksmith shop gives visitors an idea of how the horses were shod and their carts repaired when they were crucial to local life, and there’s even a special horse gas mark on display. Children love the chance to feed the heavy horses with the food available to purchase, so expect to get hands on during the day. This is a dog friendly day out for those on Dorset holidays, as they’re welcome in the park on leads.
