Events in Weymouth and PortlandThe Weymouth events scene has always been jam packed with free festivals and spectacles, and 2012 is about to see the gaze of the world fall on it. Thanks to its large natural harbour and perfect sailing conditions, Portland has been chosen as the official host of the sailing events for 2012, so it’s set to be a busy era for the area with plenty going on for guests of Weymouth holiday cottages. |

2012 OlympicsThere’s only one Weymouth and Portland event that’s soon to have the whole world talking, and that’s the sailing events held in the waters during 2012. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy aims to promote sailing to the young, and the huge Portland harbour and perfect Weymouth waters won the honour of hosting the Olympic and Paralympics sailing events for the 2012 Olympics. As well as the official events in Weymouth, Weymouth & Portland Council will be arranging a festival in the run up to the games, as well as various free and ticketed events to make the most of it during them. For example, Weymouth Beach will be one of the best spots for a view of the races, and free tickets will be available to grab a prime spot on it.

Weymouth Beach MotocrossNow for one of the most exciting events in the Weymouth events calendar, the Weymouth Beach Motocross is set for 16 October 2011. This thrilling event in Weymouth sees more than 250 of England’s top riders take to the sands and complete the famous beach course. The races start around 1pm, and there will be 6 in total. The riders will have their skills tested to the max, with them reaching speeds of up to 70mph and creating a breathtaking sight. This is a free event, and it’s one of the best sporting events in Weymouth and Portland.

Dorset Beach Volley ClassicHere’s a summery event in Weymouth, the Dorset Beach Volleyball Classic. Set for 29 July this year, this popular event will see a section of the Weymouth RAF Careers Volleyball Classic take to the sands to battle it out over the net! (Sorry, but we can’t promise it’ll be exactly the same as the famous scene from Top Gun...) The game will start at 4pm, so choose your spot carefully if you’re planning to sunbathe that day. Due to its size, Weymouth events often take place on its beach, so this is just one example of the many every year.

Weymouth Carnival Day and FireworksEverybody loves this annual event in Weymouth. August sees Weymouth Carnival Day and Fireworks brighten the classic seaside town with colourful sights and a display to remember. Weymouth Seafront will be the best vantage point for the fun on 17 August, and it’s always a great day out for the whole family. The carnival and airshow never disappoint, so if you time your holiday for this Weymouth event you’re in for a treat. Check the airshow times on the day for exact info.
